Invitation Cancelled-III

Invitation Cancelled-III

Perhaps
As a way of instant communication
In unforeseen situations
When we cancel much planned engagements impromptu
And prefer to convey to the guests
Via neighbours or common acquaintances
(At the back of mind thinking of a detailed sharing of events at a later indefinite date)
He would have put out advertisements of
"Invitation Cancelled" " Invitation Cancelled"
As he had to confront more urgent work
Like searching for the missing
Attending the injured
Mourning the dead
Or just suffering in silence
Or praying for the safety of the invitees
Or some work requiring lonely engagements
In a crowded noisy ambience
As if reminding him of the geological definition of a valley--
' a depression in the hills'.

Invitation Cancelled-II

Invitation Cancelled-II

" Come over sometime with your family"
My poet-friend from the valley
Had invited me warmly
"These days it is better",
His words had already conjured up for me
Images of inviting snow-capped peaks
Musical streams, tall Chinars lined up
To greet me with a guard of honour of sorts,
Before he had added with a chuckle
" Like a patient etherised upon a table".
It was meant to evoke an intellectual laughter for sure
But I had taken it seriously
Now making me wonder
If the bold headlined
" Invitation Cancelled" " Invitation Cancelled"
Has now been put out by him for me
Or somebody just wrote "cancelled" in a hurry
Meaning "postponed"...

Invitation Cancelled

I did not cancel it
Am no body to do so
It cancelled itself out
Placed itself right on the top
Unlike the fine prints of ‘Conditions Apply’
Which remain hidden somewhere underneath
The brochures of insurance companies--
Rather like the hawkers of fish market
It cried hoarsely and in unison
“Invitation Cancelled’, ‘Invitation Cancelled’
After all what do you expect
In this morbid valley of broken vows
When all come in to bemoan
Uninvited, unsolicited, unproposed
Erasing the distinctions
Between you and me
Between twilight and wee-hours
Between death and life
Between reality and illusion
Between images real and those in the mirror

Between hosts and guests
